The Prom Coast is one of the best places in South Gippsland to explore on foot or by bike, with spectacular coastal walks, bushland trails, quiet country roads and some of Victoria’s most famous hiking tracks. From an easy stroll along the foreshore to a challenging hike through Wilsons Promontory, there are routes for families, casual walkers, experienced hikers and cyclists.

Best Coastal Walks

Walk along beaches, cliffs, headlands and coastal tracks while enjoying spectacular views across Bass Strait. Some of the best coastal walking can be found around Wilsons Promontory, Inverloch, Walkerville, Venus Bay, Waratah Bay and Sandy Point.

Best Hiking Trails

For a more challenging adventure, head into Wilsons Promontory National Park, where you’ll find longer hikes through forests, mountains, beaches and spectacular wilderness. Popular walks include Mount Oberon, Tidal River to Squeaky Beach, Vereker Outlook and Sealers Cove.

Best Family Walks

There are plenty of shorter and easier walks suitable for families with children. Sandy Point, Waratah Bay, Inverloch and Tidal River offer relatively easy coastal and foreshore walks where you can enjoy the scenery without committing to a long hike.

Best Walks for Views

For spectacular scenery, head to Mount Oberon, Vereker Outlook, Eagles Nest and the coastal tracks around Wilsons Promontory. These walks offer panoramic views across Bass Strait, surrounding islands, beaches and the South Gippsland countryside.

Bushwalking & Forest Trails

Explore the forests and native bushland of South Gippsland on tracks ranging from short nature walks to longer hikes. Wilsons Promontory, Tarra-Bulga National Park and the Strzelecki Ranges offer some of the region’s best forest walking.

Best Beach Walks

South Gippsland has kilometres of sandy coastline perfect for long beach walks. Squeaky Beach, Norman Beach, Venus Bay, Waratah Bay and Sandy Point are particularly enjoyable for walking, beachcombing and watching the sunrise or sunset.

Dog-Friendly Walks

Discover walking routes where dogs are permitted, including sections of beach and foreshore around the Prom Coast. We’ll highlight off-leash areas, restrictions and seasonal rules so visitors know where they can safely enjoy a walk with their dog.

Best Cycling Routes

Quiet country roads and coastal routes make South Gippsland excellent for recreational cycling. Ride through the rolling farmland around Foster, Fish Creek, Koonwarra, Meeniyan and Leongatha, or follow coastal routes towards Sandy Point, Waratah Bay and Wilsons Promontory.

Road Cycling

Experience some of South Gippsland’s beautiful rural roads by bike, with rolling hills, dairy farms, forests and coastal scenery. Routes around Fish Creek, Foster, Meeniyan, Koonwarra and the Strzelecki Ranges are particularly popular with road cyclists.

Mountain Biking

For off-road riding, explore forest trails and mountain bike tracks around South Gippsland. The hills and forests around Mirboo North, Korumburra and the Strzelecki Ranges provide more challenging terrain for experienced riders.

Enjoy easy walks close to the region’s towns and coastal villages. Inverloch, Sandy Point, Waratah Bay, Port Welshpool, Port Franklin and Toora all provide opportunities to stretch your legs while enjoying waterfront and rural scenery.

Wildlife & Nature Walks

Combine walking with wildlife watching on trails through wetlands, forests, beaches and coastal reserves. Wilsons Promontory and the surrounding coastal areas are particularly good places to see kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, emus and a wide variety of native birds.

Scenic Country Walks

Head inland from the coast to discover rolling green hills, dairy farms, forests and quiet country roads. The areas around Foster, Fish Creek, Meeniyan, Koonwarra, Mirboo North and Leongatha are ideal for combining a walk or bike ride with a scenic drive through the countryside.

Moderate — Longer coastal and bush tracks involving hills, uneven surfaces or longer distances.
